Pixlr is one of the top free design editing tools on the internet today. With its browser-based editor tool, it’s quickly become one of the go-to solutions for creating and editing images on the go. With the same power and features that compare to Adobe Photoshop, it’s one of the top tools for not only creating images online but also for online training and tutorials as well. In this video, we will be walking through the process of how to use layers within the Pixlr editor design tool.

Pixlr Editor Design Basics: Working with Layers

The community manager for Pixlr I’m going to teach you about layers.

If you never use picks or editor or a graphic design app it’s like this. Players are the single most important thing you need to learn about you already know how to use layers you might find a few extra things in here that you didn’t know about like layer style. In any case let’s get right to it for this tutorial I’m going to take an image. Photographed recently on a trip to Bend Oregon. And I’m going to add some text and a logo and make a fake ad for Mt. Bachelor or a ski resort. Whenever you open an image or create a new canvas from scratch you always start with a background layer. This layer is always locked. You can click the lock icon double click it unlock it if you want. Every time you add text you got a new layer. Copy and paste an image and a new layer automatically. I’m going to show you how to easily add a few layers. A few things you can do with each layer first thing I’m going to do is add some text. I’ve got a little tagline I made up famously bad road conditions I’m going to throw that in here and then I’m going to choose a font picture editor uses the fonts that are installed on your computer. So if you have some favorite fonts. Definitely, don’t install them and you can use those.

I’m going to use yeta on my favorites.

I resize it to get it closer to the size that I want and drag and drop. I can change the color into something a little dark blue sky well with the Arctic theme. Once you’ve laid down this layer you can always come back and edited again later. One thing that I like and I think a lot of people like is to add a drop shadow. You have a few layers styles options. One of those options and drop shadow you can control how far away the shadow is how strong it is. I like to play it out a little bit. Both styles are also editable later if you need to.
Once I’ve added that I’ve decided that my image canvas isn’t for size I need it to be.

I would actually make it taller a little higher. I’m going to add some text and space at the bottom. Do that by choosing resize canvas. I add 200 pixels to it and I’m going to zoom out here and you can see that I anchored that the center top so that the blank space for my canvas. Here’s Bob one of the things I want to put in that space is a logo for a bachelor. Found one online. I’m going to open the image here I’m going to select all copy and paste and using the shortcut here. You can use the menu items if you need to go to drag them around if you’ll notice. Now I have a new layer that layers automatically graded whenever you add image.

One big question people have when they start using layers is how do i resize just this layer. You could do that by copying it into a new document and resizing it. But that’s tedious and there is an easy way to do it. You’re going to use the free transform option in the edit menu when you choose that you’ll see some bounding boxes appear. You can see that my logo now has few options for me to drag and drop or even rotate if I wanted to.

When you’re resizing like this hold down the Shift key and it will resize proportionally. This will print your image from stretching and you can just eyeball it however you want. Come back again and do another transform when you’re feeling. I really like that. Drop shadow. I’m going to add another layer style when I do a drop shadow again. Lower the opacity change the distance a little bit lower it out a little bit. So now I have three layers. I have a text layer. I have a image logo in there and I have the regular background layer. You’ll notice that that background layer when I double clicked the check box to unlock it. It’s now called layers. You can always rename these layers that you’d like to. Do. When I have a little bit more text.

Just as I did before I’m going to drag things around to where I want I can move this text box around if I need to.

I decided that I didn’t like where this logo was going to be going to free transform again and resize and make a little smaller little fit there. Now like I said the background layer of the previous background layer. Is now layered zero so I’m going to add another background layer. Without another layer here and then I’m going to drop to paint and paint everything white shoes the paint bucket. Color picker. It. OK.

Then drop some paint on that layer if you want to manage your layers and merge them together.

For example here all merge these two layers together by merging one down and the other one. But for the most part I would recommend that you keep your layers and in fact save them as a file excuse the default file format for a picture. Once you save an image in that format either to a picture library you created an account on your computer you can come back on open it again and keep working on those letters. You don’t say what is a pixie but as a P and G or a j peg or something like that it’s going to flatten the image.
So I strongly recommend that you’re using something that you want come back and edit again or a template that something that you’re going to use a lot. Same as if the XTi file you’ll be able to open that in any browser whenever you need to work on it.

Those are the basics of layers and Bixler editor there’s more advanced things you can learn like layer mask will cover that video but these are the basics that you need to know if you’ve never used an app like this. For once you’ve mastered these you’ll find that it decreases what you can do with it that. Way.

Special thanks to Pixlr for the video tutorial and walk through.
